About this Event
Esther Horvath © Manuel Ernst
Esther Horvath is a Hungarian photographer known for her striking work on science, climate change and life in extreme regions. Born in Hungary, she developed an interest in visual storytelling at an early age and studied photography before specialising in documentary projects. Her work combines aesthetic sensitivity with a strong focus on scientific themes and human stories.
Horvath gained international recognition in particular for her long-term documentation of research expeditions in the Arctic. As an expedition photographer, she accompanied, among others, the MOSAiC expedition – one of the largest polar research missions in history – during which she captured the daily lives of scientists working in extreme conditions. Her images not only reveal the beauty and harshness of the polar region, but also highlight the urgency of the climate crisis.
She has received numerous awards for her work, including the World Press Photo Award. She also works as a photographer for organisations such as the Alfred Wegener Institute and regularly collaborates with international media outlets, including National Geographic.
Esther Horvath lives and works in Germany and is regarded as one of the most important contemporary documentary photographers in the field of environmental and scientific photography. Her work is characterised by intimacy, respect and a deep understanding of the people behind the research.
