______
ILDIKO KOVACS
Edging Form
One of Australia’s most respected abstract painters, Ildiko Kovacs is renowned for images that, whilst grounded in her sense of the Australian landscape, are at the same time deeply personal meditations on her life and emotions.
About this body of work, Ildiko shares: “I like my paintings to show the history of making, to become activated through the process of reworking. Accumulated layers are built up; rhythm and impulse guiding the drawn line across the surface as I choreograph form. My process is intuitive and felt. It responds to an internal psychological and emotional landscape that is expressed through physicality and spontaneity. This momentum imbues the painting with a kind of life force.”

GEORGE COOLEY
Picture Perfect: Painted Country
George Cooley is a senior man and community leader from Coober Pedy. He holds leadership positions across the Umoona and Coober Pedy communities and is a Director of APY Art Centre Collective. As a talented artist and opal miner, George paints the landscape surrounding his Country, particularly the Breakaways, an important site 25km north of Coober Pedy, known for its spectacular hills, mesas and plains.
George says: "My story is about the painted desert landscapes, landscaping of country and the environment of Coober Pedy. I've been living in Coober Pedy since 1958. I try to capture the beauty of the ochre colours around the country I love. Granite rocks, hills, mulga scrubs. The way the colours change in different seasons, the red dirt as you go further north. As an opal miner, I also capture the brilliant colours of the opals and the way it blends in with the ochre shades. Using these colours reminds me of living on Country and the many campsites that we used to visit when the old people were still around."
Hugo Michell Gallery are proud to partner with Bird in Hand Winery for this opening event.
Hugo Michell Gallery acknowledges the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide region, and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.
