About this Event

Date: Wednesday 16 October

Time: 2-4pm

Location: Room LT 7.2, Queens Building, Streatham Campus, University of Exeter

All are welcome to attend a public screening of the short film Il Moro – The Moor (22 mins) about the life of Alessandro de’ Medici, the first Duke of Florence in 1530 and the first man of African descent to become a head of state in Renaissance Europe. While unveiling a true story from the past, the film aims to speak loudly of the situations that Black Europeans are still experiencing today and to celebrate today's Afro-European community in the history of the continent. Directed by Daphne Di Cinto, a Black Italian screenwriter, director and actor.

The screening will be followed by a roundtable discussion with leading scholars in history, languages, and visual studies, to explore the film’s many dimensions: Dr Hester Schadee (Archaeology & History), Professor Francesco Goglia and Dr Alessia Risi (Department of Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies).

The discussion will then lead into an open-forum dialogue with attendees.

Dr Hester Schadee (Senior Lecturer in European History, 1450-1750) is a historian of the renaissance and a specialist in Italian humanism, focusing on the uses and abuses of the past, including classical reception and the history of scholarship.

Professor Francesco Goglia (Associate Professor of Migration and Multilingualism) researches multilingualism and language contact in immigrant communities, and the sociolinguistics of the Italian diaspora.

Dr Alessia Risi (Lecturer in Italian and Film) specialises in contemporary Italian literature (19th-20th century), with a particular focus on Italian women's writing and crime fiction.
