Selfless Orchestra Announce Terra Nullius — A Bold New Album and Performance Confronting Australia’s Colonial Legacy
Launching Sunday October 19th at Liberty Theatre Perth as part of the Strange Ball event, presented by Strange Festival
Terra Nullius—Latin for “nobody’s land”—was the legal fiction that enabled British colonisation, denying the sovereignty and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This falsehood fuelled dispossession of land, culture and identity, a legacy that continues to shape today’s social and ecological crises.
Informed by time spent in remote Indigenous communities, the work explores what it means to be severed from land, and how bonds of belonging can be restored. Presented as a one-hour audiovisual performance, Terra Nullius traverses histories of loss, injustice and resistance—from the Maralinga nuclear tests and refugee internments at Woomera to the desecration of Murujuga’s sacred rock art. Woven together with archival recordings, documentary soundscapes and powerful performances of the band recorded live in studio, the performance asks audiences to listen—not only to the music, but to the voices of Country and those who protect it.
“This album is about confronting difficult truths, but also about listening and finding new ways forward. Through music and collaboration we hope to spark dialogue, deepen connection, and reimagine our relationship with the land we live on,” says project director Steven Alyian.
