Identity and alterity in the dialectics of capoeira
Francisca Galiléia Pereira da Silva
This lecture explores identity and alterity through capoeira, approaching it not merely as a cultural practice, but as a space for philosophical reflection and the production of knowledge. It examines how the identity of the capoeirista emerges through a dialectical relationship with others, involving recognition, confrontation, cooperation, and collective creation. By bringing together bodily movements, music, historical memory, and the communal structure of the roda, the lecture considers capoeira as a form of resistance to the legacies of slavery, colonialism, and racialization. Drawing on classical philosophy and Brazilian thinkers, the lecture presents capoeira as a distinctive expression of Brazilian philosophy and a source of insight into embodiment, recognition, and the collective formation of subjectivity.
Francisca Galiléia Pereira da Silva is Professor of Philosophy at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Brazil, where she is also Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Philosophy. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Complutense University of Madrid (2015), as well as a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the State University of Ceará, and a specialization in Islamic Manuscripts. Her research encompasses Epistemology, Language, Islamic Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics and Politics of Information Technology. Her current work increasingly explores the political and ontological dimensions of language, particularly its role in the production of meaning, the constitution of reality, and the organization of collective life. In this context, she develops research on capoeira as a bodily, historical, cultural, and political language, exploring it as a form of knowledge, resistance, identity formation, and collective meaning-making. Since 2023, she has been a member of the Board of the Brazilian National Association of Graduate Studies in Philosophy (ANPOF) and is a member of the Editorial Board of Argumentos: Revista de Filosofia, an academic philosophy journal published by UFC. Her research thus brings together philosophical, intercultural, and decolonial perspectives, establishing dialogues between different historical and cultural traditions and forms of knowledge.
