About this Event
Mushroom Identification for Beginners: The Basics
Are you new to the world of fungi, feeling in awe and inspired, but intimidated by the process of identification? Together we'll learn the basics morphology, terminology, and simple techniques for mushroom identification using a few different methods (dichotomous keys, picture-matching, community science, and more). Christian has taught hundreds of students over the years, and has over a decade of experience helping beginners overcome the common problems and pitfalls they face when first encountering the vast diversity of mushrooms.
This will be an indoor event, and masks are required.
This event is free and paid for with donations that have been given to the PMC. If you are able to do so, you are encouraged to donate to our continued work via paypal using our email: [email protected] If you register and are unable to attend, please make sure to cancel your registration.
Christian Schwarz is an itinerant naturalist loosely based in Santa Cruz, CA: the land of milk (caps) and honey (mushrooms). He studied Ecology and Evolution at UCSC, and co-authored "Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast”. He now spends his time photographing, collecting, teaching about, and researching mushrooms. Fungi satisfy his curiosity with their seemingly endless forms – from the grotesque to the bizarre to the sublimely beautiful. Besides fungal taxonomy, he loves fish, plants, nudibranchs, moths, and dragonflies, and is passionate about community science, especially iNaturalist.
