Why are we so fascinated by true crime, and what does that fascination reveal about us?
True crime is everywhere. We listen to the podcasts, binge the documentaries, read the books, and follow cases involving people we’ve never met. But what draws us to stories about M**der, mystery, and the darker side of human behaviour, and what does our fascination with them reveal about us?
Join writer, reporter, and true crime author Nate Hendley for a conversation exploring our enduring fascination with true crime. Drawing on notable cases, he’ll take us beyond the headlines to examine the cultural appeal of the genre, why certain crimes capture our attention, and how the stories we tell about them shape the way we understand crime and justice.
Along the way, we’ll confront some of the more uncomfortable questions surrounding true crime: When does storytelling become entertainment? What responsibility do writers and audiences have to the real people behind these stories? And what can our appetite for true crime teach us about society, media, justice, and human nature?
