About this Event
Ind. Day #3 - BFI Doc Society Screening and Director In-Conversation – Adura Baba Mi | NFF2025
As part of our Industry Day, we’re delighted to present a screening of intimate documentary Adura Baba Mi, followed by an in-conversation with the film’s director Juliana Kasumu and a representative from BFI Doc Society.
This session will unpack the journey from funding to production, offering practical insights into the documentary process and the support available for young filmmakers through Doc Society.
The BFI Doc Society Fund supports and nurtures independent non-fiction film and immersive projects by UK filmmakers, prioritising expansive, director-led storytelling. It does so through its Features Fund, Research and Development Fund, and Made of Truth Short Film Fund, which are supported by a year-round talent development and outreach programme.
Juliana Kasumu is a British-Nigerian artist and filmmaker whose multidisciplinary practice spans documentary, narrative, and experimental film, as well as photography and installation. Her work explores identity formation through fragmented, non-linear storytelling, often rooted in personal and diasporic histories.
Kasumu’s acclaimed short film BABYBANGZ premiered in the UK at the BFI London Film Festival and received the Grand Jury Prize at AFI Fest, the Audience Award for Best Documentary at BlackStar Film Festival, and Best Cinematography at the New Orleans Film Festival. What Does the Water Taste Like? was also awarded the 2021 Aesthetica Emerging Art Prize.
Other works include Losing Joy, which premiered at BFI Flare and was nominated for Best Short Film at both the Edinburgh International Film Festival and BlackStar Film Festival. Her latest film, Adura Baba Mi, premiered at Camden International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Short Film at the 2024 BFI London Film Festival.
