Title: What Happens at Shorter Distances?
Our understanding of Nature is composed of separate descriptions addressing phenomena at different length sales. Progress in science occurs in two opposite directions. One direction is the search for fundamental laws at shorter distances, laws that underlie the descriptions at longer distances. The other direction is the discovery of new long-distance consequences of these basic laws. We will demonstrate this two-way approach using several examples from different branches of science. We will also argue that this two-way approach will likely change in the context of string theory.
Speaker: Nathan Seiberg
Nathan Seiberg is a leading mathematical physicist whose work has advanced string theory, quantum field theory, particle physics, and condensed matter physics. His exact solutions have revealed the role of electric-magnetic duality, influencing both physics and mathematics. A Faculty member at the Institute for Advanced Study since 1997, he has been recognized with the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, the Dirac Medal, and other notable awards. His recent studies on dualities, symmetries, and anomalies in condensed matter systems offer valuable insights. Seiberg’s lecture provides an opportunity to explore key developments at the intersection of theoretical physics and mathematics.
