Iconoclasm - from Greek: eikṓn, 'figure, icon' + kláō, 'to break'
Welcome to The Roses - a garden, a parlor, a shrine, and a cabaret where the boundaries between past/present/future, ancestors/descendants, the earth and the grave blur and thin. Here - queer ancestors long passed gather, voices freed from generations of a history they did not choose. And, let me tell you, they have songs to sing.
Iconoclasm is a sweeping ritual-cabaret conceived of by songwriter and performer Carlisle Evans Peck. They are out to queer what it means to be a bard. With stories drawn from familial lore and oral histories, Carlisle invites queer ancestors known and unknown onto the stage and into the spotlight - they embody the bachelor farmers, the coal miner lovers, the genderqueer witches, and the ancestral drag mothers of their family lineage and sing their tales. Part ritual, part music-theater, and backed by a live rock orchestra, Iconoclasm traverses balladry, glam rock, and drag, breaking cracks in the veneer of history to release the glittering forgotten lives within. If you can’t see yourself in the stories you’ve been given, write yourself in - with maximal glitter.
Casting this musical spell is a powerful ensemble - instrumentalists Willow Waters, Toby Ramaswamy, Peter Morrow, Adrian Cox-Thurmond, Crystal Myslajek, and vocalists Sarah Larsson, Kasi Misseldine, and Alijah Goetting.
This event is for the second of two Minneapolis performances on July 13 2024. The first is on July 12.
6:30 doors, 7:30 show
Content Warning - The ancestral life histories recounted in this performance illuminate historical traumas and oppressions, specifically of LGBTQIA+ individuals, and include references to events that some viewers may find difficult to hold, including suicide, domestic abuse, anti-queer violence, mental illness, HIV/AIDS, and accidental death. None of these are depicted in a graphic way.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Carlisle Evans Peck is a composer, songwriter, and teacher based in Minneapolis. They have been an active performer in the Twin Cities and Upper Midwest music scene for nearly a decade – performing their own work and collaborating with artists in theater, film and dance. Their recorded work includes the orchestral-rock epic Electric Porcelain (2018) and the song cycle for apocalyptic resilience The Last Noble Thing (2020). They were a 2020 recipient of the Minnesota Music Creators Award, and a 2022 Cedar Commissions artist.
