Iconic Churches of Hawai‘i with Merle O’Neill
A Cultural & Architectural Journey
Architecture is more than construction—it is identity, belief, and heritage expressed in wood, stone, and space. Join us for a guided visit to two of Hawai‘i’s most fascinating immigrant-founded churches, each deeply shaped by the homelands of their congregations: China and Japan.
On this tour, historian Merle O’Neill will illuminate how cultural perspectives, symbolism, and craftsmanship influence Christian worship in Hawai‘i.
🏛️ Stop 1: The First Chinese Church of Christ (1929)
Designed by renowned architect Hart Wood in the distinctive “Hawaiian Architecture” style, this church masterfully blends Eastern and Western traditions.
You’ll see a thoughtful integration of Chinese decorative motifs with Christian symbolism, creating a space that reflects the congregation’s roots and faith.
🏯 Stop 2: Makiki Christian Church
Founded in 1904 by Rev. Takie Okumura, this church stands alone as the only Christian church in the United States modeled after a 16th-century Japanese castle of the Edo period.
Its design is a bold architectural statement on identity, faith, and cultural pride.
