Tickets at icarusinheat.comIcarus In Heat is a bold new performance work that reimagines the myth of Icarus in the charged space between father and son. Where desire is inherited, escape is a construction, and fire is not just a warning but an inevitability.
The piece unfolds as a fractured narrative told through movement, music, and shadow puppetry. What begins as a fall becomes a reckoning: with the father who built the wings, the systems that ache for conformity, and the longing that refused containment. At its core, Icarus In Heat interrogates the tension between self-determination and inherited consequence. It asks: What do we carry that was never ours? What must we burn to become? This is not a cautionary tale. It is a confrontation.
Driven by Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pathétique”), the work draws on the score’s sweeping emotional architecture. Its tenderness, its violence, its inevitability carry Icarus through a labyrinth both intimate and mythic in scale. The music does not simply accompany the flight; it begs for the leap.
Created by Lexington-based interdisciplinary artist Tom Willis, whose work spans theatre, sculpture, and installation. Icarus In Heat continues a practice that stages collision; between body and structure, inheritance and autonomy, desire and its consequences.
This work is built by a community of collaborators; choreographers, writers, painters, technicians, and designers whose expertise shapes every detail of the piece. And at its heart is a stunning cast of male dancers from Lexington and beyond, whose strength, precision, and presence drive the performance with intense tenderness and raw power.
