About ICAN of Atlanta:
We are a chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness Network, a volunteer-run non-profit organization that works to improve maternal-child health through peer-to-peer support, education, and advocacy. Our in-person meetings allow us to support those who are processing previous births or are seeking information about future birth options. We also welcome any who want to improve the birth climate in the Atlanta area.
Our meetings are open to the public. While we are grateful to those who choose to support our organization through membership (www.ican-online.org/join), we *do not* require nor expect those who attend meetings or who interact in our private FB support group to be paid members.
What to expect at our meetings:
Our meetings tend to be fairly informal. Leaders start by introducing themselves and sharing a bit about what brought them to ICAN. The floor is then opened for attendees to introduce themselves, if desired, and for us to provide group support as appropriate. If there is a specific topic for the meeting, then we move on to cover the topic. Otherwise, we focus on group support for those attending. We will aim to have any meeting topic covered within an hour but may continue the support portion for longer, as needed. We are happy to have all join the discussion, but recognize not everyone is comfortable sharing or speaking in a group, and we welcome those who want to simply come to observe as well.
Babies are always welcome, and the meeting room is toddler-safe. We will not turn away anyone who brings an older child, but do encourage those with older children to try to find alternate care arrangements, as we may be discussing sensitive topics. We do not provide anything to keep a child occupied, so that would need to be supplied by the parent.
COVID-19 considerations:
As this is an indoor meeting space, masks are welcome for those who choose to wear them. The room is fair-sized, and we will spread out as possible in the room.
Please do not come if you are not feeling well or have symptoms of illness. If you are not able to make it, we would be happy to have a leader talk with you on the phone, chat on FB messenger, and/or send any resource information that was discussed during the meeting.
