About this Event
The Irish American Heritage Museum (IAHM) is proud to continue its quarterly event entitled "IAHM's Celtic Influences Performance Series." These shows, held at Albany's most intimate and unique performance space (IAHM's Flanagan Theater), highlight performers and acts from around the globe that share their energy and art with our rich, ancestral Irish culture.
IAHM is also a proud co-sponsor of Metroland Now's First Friday Albany performance series, a monthly celebration of arts and culture.
On the first Friday of February, IAHM and Metroland Now welcomes Frigg, a band that has been conquering the world for twenty-five years with a fusion of western folk music styles that leans heavily towards Nordic folk music. Make no mistake about this very real, "chicken-before-the-egg" dilemma, which could be the fodder of some VERY interesting debates over some very delicious pints. Just who influenced who, and ... is it a linear equation??? ("You MAY have influenced us first, but we took it from there and now you sound like US!!!") We all know well how celtic influences strongly bluegrass music. Because of Frigg's bluegrass influences, the world music community has coined the term "nordgrass" to describe the Finnish band's music. Suffice to say until you are in IAHM's intimate, unique 60-seat space (Flanagan Theater) listening to Frigg yourself to help you decide, we predict this: it will be impossible to NOT both hear and see the strong relation between the Scandanavian and trad Irish genres.
Frigg is a six-piece string band, with four fiddle virtuosos. Frigg has brough its fresh, unique and energetic shows to old fans and new across the globe. We at the Irish American Heritage Museum are lucky to have Frigg with us in Albany as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. Frigg has toured the world extensively since 2000, and has "brought down the house" in such famous gatherings as Celtic Connections, the Cambridge Folk Festival and the Rainforest World Music Festival. Through its TV and radio performances, Frigg has reached millions of people, with their performances in A Prarie Home Companion and NHK World Japan channel's El Mundo program.
Frigg has released eleven albums. Notably, three of these albums have been featured on the "Top of the World" list by the leading world music magazine, Songlines. Additionally, fRoots, SingOut!, and Rhythms have frequently highlighted the band with prominent articles and rave reviews. Frigg's albums have consistently been at the top of the two largest international world music charts: the World Music Charts Europe and the Transglobal World Music Chart.
IAHM is thrilled to bring Frigg to its Flanagan Theater.
The Irish American Heritage Museum is grateful for its sponsors: the Flanagan Family, Common Roots Brewing Company, Park Albany and Metroland Now. IAHM is especially grateful for the continued support from Metroland Now. IAHM also thanks all of the brilliant supporters of the arts and culture here in Albany, making Albany's First Friday Concert Series possible: Advance Albany County Alliance, Tulip City Creative, the Albany Convention Center Authority, and the CDTA.
