The beautiful Catholic Church of the Holy Name (M13 9PG) at Manchester University is a Grade 1 listed building, modelled on Chartres Cathedral and is also the largest church in Manchester (many people don’t even know that it exists!). It’s also an amazing place to sing and is blessed with a grand Victorian organ. To help open it up to a wider community, we’re hosting an inter-generational Come and Sing event on Friday June 12 called “I was glad”.
In addition to singing Parry’s wonderful coronation anthem, we will perform highlights from Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation and Brahms’ Requiem (both in English) and also Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, plus Faure’s gorgeous Cantique de Jean Racine. The choir and orchestra will be directed by the brilliant and lovely young Swiss conductor, Rosina Flueckiger, who is completing her postgraduate conducting studies at the RNCM alongside working with professional orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic. There will be an afternoon rehearsal (13.30-16.30) culminating in a short concert at 17.00.
