About this Event
In a world where countless individuals embark on perilous journeys in search of a place to call home, the stories of immigrants have never been more relevant or compelling. "I Want a Country," an upcoming theatrical production, aims to explore these profound narratives. A co-production between Eclipses Group Theater NY and TeamTheatre, the show is directed by visionary Ioanna Katsarou.
About "I Want a Country"
"I Want a Country" delves into the universal human longing for belonging, expressed through the unique voices of a theatrical chorus. Written by Andreas Flourakis, one of Greece’s most acclaimed contemporary playwrights, the play explores the individual and collective stories of immigrants. Characters reveal their motivations for seeking or creating a new country, driven by war, poverty, persecution, and the desire for a better life. The narrative raises profound questions: What is this new country? What should it look like? Is it the same for everyone, or is it no more than a utopian dream?
A Unique Theatrical Experience
This production transcends the written script, incorporating devised elements where cast members perform monologues inspired by their own life experiences. The performance will also feature original songs in collaboration with our composer, the accomplished musician Peter Douskalis. These personal stories will be seamlessly interwoven with Flourakis's text, resulting in a deeply moving and authentic portrayal of the immigrant experience. We are also thrilled to present a version of the script translated by Eleni Drivas specifically for a New York City audience. This innovative approach ensures that "I Want a Country" is not just a play but a living, breathing exploration of humanity.
