I AM WOMAN: Colina Wymarra Exhibition Opening

This powerful exhibition traces the journey of womanhood through the eyes of Colina Wymarra, reflecting her personal path of identity, resilience, and transformation.

As a proud Gudang/Yadhaykenu woman from Cape York and a Dauareb/Komet woman from Mer Island in the Torres Strait, Colina offers a layered glimpse into the complexity of her identity through her art.

Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Colina incorporates collage elements throughout selected pieces. Cotton materials adorned with First Nations designs symbolise the source of her strength, drawn from her maternal and paternal bloodlines as well as a deep spiritual connection she has encountered throughout different stages of her life.

Colina honours her ancestry and the women who inspire her, crafting a visual dialogue that connects past, present and future. Her lived experiences, from childhood to adulthood, are embedded in each work, forming a narrative of growth, strength and resilience. Through this exhibition, she invites connection and reflection, offering a celebration of culture, identity and the ongoing journey of becoming.

The physical layout of I AM WOMAN reflects the many facets that make up the artist’s identity. It is more than an exhibition; it is an evolving story of self-discovery, cultural strength and creative expression.

As Colina states, "I am both a woman and a continuous work in progress."
