About this Event
This immersive mixed-media experience is centered around moments of self-reflection. Assata explores themes of eco-futurism through a Black Queer magical realism lens.
About This Event
The Gala Opening’s themed dress code is to come as your most ethereal self. Viewers will be able to immerse themselves in a magical eco-futurist reality. Assata’s exhibition comprises six mixed media works surrounded by lush greenery on the gallery walls. Each mixed media work utilizes technology and traditional art. Animations are projected over sculptures, and paintings will have augmented reality filters and a virtual reality headset that will transport viewers to a safe space.
The "I Am An Ancestor Too" Gala Opening will utilize different rooms for viewers to explore the full Assata’s Magic experience. The first room is a speakeasy-inspired lounge that will feature live musical performances by Asha Kevonna and Gabriel Alejandro Mejia-Estrella at 8-8:20pm and 9-9:20pm. In the second room, there will be refreshments and the displayed artworks from the Mango & Pomelo participants. Finally, in the third room, viewers can watch the behind-the-scenes screening of Assata’s 6 month-long process of creating their solo art exhibition, I Am An Ancestor Too.
