Kata Meic's Artist Statement💙idfRNT

I’m different, so are you!

Right?

So why are you different?

What sets you apart from others?

Do you see things differently or maybe you look too different from everyone else?

Whatever different is to you I encourage you to just be that and be you!

Why is being different not accepted even though they say it is?

It’s easy to follow the crowd (or is it)? I don’t know, but I do know this.

Be kind.

Be respectful.

Stay true to who you are even if you’re not sure who that is but I think you know. We shouldn’t have to fight for what we believe is to be true, it should be common sense. Maybe one day the world will not be so fearful and honour we're human.

idfRNt is my way to show just that and be proud.

Ask me why I’m different…you might be surprised, if you open your eyes and heart, maybe then you’ll see that my heart beats just like yours.

About Raphael Weinroth-Browne

Internationally renowned Canadian cellist and composer Raphael Weinroth-Browne has been celebrated for his emotive and virtuosic playing both on stage and in the studio.

Combining his classical training with a passion for progressive metal and Middle Eastern music, he has defied traditional notions of how the cello should sound and developed a unique artistic voice that has consistently resonated with listeners on a deep emotional level.

He has played on Juno award-winning albums, performed in front of over 40,000 people at the world’s biggest metal festival, made viral YouTube covers, and worked closely with contemporary dancers on multidisciplinary collaborations.

In 2016, Raphael was recruited by Norwegian progressive rock icons Leprous. His cello has since been featured prominently on their latest three albums and he has played over 200 shows with them in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. Most recently he performed with the band at London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall and appeared on opening slots for rock heavyweights Evanescence, Devin Townsend, and Apocalyptica.

As a session musician, Raphael has appeared on over 150 studio albums, including the Juno Award-winning Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light (Woods of Ypres). He has also captured the attention of prominent prog and metal artists such as Opeth and Steven Wilson with his innovative cello covers of their songs in his own unique style.

Raphael’s debut solo album, Worlds Within, was released in 2020 to critical acclaim. A haunting 40-minute piece for amplified cello based around cyclical looped patterns and lush reverb-laden soundscapes, the album weaves together elements of ambient music, post rock, modern classical, and progressive metal, standing confidently alongside the work of similar artists such as Sarah Neufeld, Jessica Moss, Zoë Keating, and Jo Quail.

About Kerry Holder, Chef and Owner Reggae Rooster

I was born in Barbados and my family moved to New York City.

I was introduced to Jamaican food while living in New York City, and it became my food.

I moved to Ottawa in 2009 and really missed New York City Jamaican food.

I tried numerous places in Ottawa, and in one particular place I even tried to convert them to New York City Jamaican food. They weren’t interested and I started cooking New York City Jamaican food at home, and in March of 2023 I decided to open Reggae Rooster where I could cook my favourite food all the time.

I wanted to share my food with Ottawa and went through a lot of cooks until one of my friends I have known for 20 years who’d been working in restaurants since we were teenagers, joined me and we have built this restaurant together.

I’ve always had a passion for food. My mom has always done a lot of cooking and baking and she helps me in the restaurant.

I studied business management in college and my passion for food is the battery that charges me.
A friend found this location and I remember coming to see it on a winter day. I stood on the corner for an hour and a half and watched the foot traffic along the street. The foot traffic was the reason I chose this location. The restaurant was an eyesore and I did a lot of work to make it what I want. And now, I like the community. It has opened up its’ doors and welcomed my staff and I.

All the dishes are my favorite dishes. The jerk chicken is one I go to. The curry goat is another. But some days I love handhelds. It all depends on the time of day or how hungry I am.

Most Caribbean restaurants are Jamaican so I opened a Jamaican restaurant, but I’m Bajan. In Barbados we don't do oxtail. We don't do jerk. But we do stew chicken and curry chicken. We do a lot more fish. We do flying fish and dolphin (mahi mahi). I opened a Jamaican restaurant to give customers what they knew and liked, and now I’m beginning to show my Barbados side. Now that people have gotten to know my food and become accustomed, I add a bit of Barbados every Friday and Saturday. Our hits have been the saltfish, mahi mahi and fish cakes.

My Mom is helping while visiting Ottawa from New York City and I’d like her to stay in Ottawa. I've been stealing a lot of her recipes.

We'll be including these on december 16th in the price of your tickets; Fish Cake, Pumpkin Fritters, Curry Chicken Roti Bites, Goat Roti Bites, Jerk Chicken Roti Bites, and Chickpeas Roti Bites.
