If you are not familiar with hügelkultur, it is a method of creating a raised bed with lots of organic material that will slowly break down and fertilize the plantings and need little irrigation due to the excellent water holding capacity of decomposed organic matter. This article from OSU Extension (the other OSU that is- Oklahoma State University) provides a good intro to hügelkultur for anyone who would like to read more about it.
During the workshop we will be creating a 50-foot long hügelkultur mound for a hedgerow planting with the guidance of two knowledgeable hügelkultur builders in our community. We anticipate planting the hugel mound in November with a variety of shade-loving native plants- stay tuned for planting party details, coming soon!
Beyond the hugel-hedgerow, this rainy season we will be planting the north section of the swale with native plants (from the smaller bridge to the exit culvert), and planting a filtration rain garden to clean up any runoff from our greenhouses. We will be doing a work party for each big planting push, so stay tuned! Can’t wait to get more of our amazing native plants in the ground!
