Wayne Caldwell, author of Cataloochee, returns to North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains to continue the story of Susan McFalls, who is left on Mount Pisgah after the death of her dear friend and neighbor Posey Green. These poems follow Susan as she moves to and renovates an old house on River Road, vividly bringing to life the wild and beautiful land and culture of the Blue Ridge and the cherished memories and new friends that continue to anchor her to this special place.
River Road is a companion to Caldwell's first poetry collection, Woodsmoke, and while the two can stand alone, together they paint a fuller picture of friendship, loss, and the ways in which lives are shaped by the North Carolina mountains.
Wayne Caldwell is the author of two novels, Cataloochee (2007) and Requiem by Fire (2010; reissued 2020). His first volume of poetry, Woodsmoke, was published in 2021. He follows this
with River Road (2024). Another novel, Shadow Family, is forthcoming in March, 2025. He has won both the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award from WNCHA and the James Still
Award from the Fellowship of Southern Writers.
Terry Roberts is the author of six celebrated novels: A Short Time to Stay Here (winner of the Willie Morris Prize for Southern Fiction and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction); That Bright Land (winner of the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award, the James Still Award for Writing About the Appalachian South and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction); The Holy Ghost Speakeasy and Revival (Finalist for the 2019 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction); My Mistress’ Eyes are Raven Black (Finalist for the 2022 Best Paperback Original Novel by the International Thriller Writers Organization); and most recently, The Sky Club (Finalist for the 2023 Thomas Wolfe Literary Award). The Devil Hath a Pleasing Shape will be released on October 1, 2024.
