Gardens, like any creative endeavor, have the power to evoke emotions and memories. A well-designed garden can inspire feelings of peace, curiosity, or excitementโemotions that are carefully crafted through the designer's decisions. Programming a garden involves making countless choices that shape the visitor's experience. By studying the artistic process, garden designers can enhance these evocative qualities. Join landscape architect and artist, Preston Montague, as he shares key steps from his artistic process that help improve the narrative and emotional impact in his garden designs.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Preston Montague is a landscape architect and artist dedicated to strengthening the connection between people and the natural world. Growing up in the foothills of Virginia, he developed a deep appreciation for the environment while studying landscape painting with professional artists. His experience as a freelance exhibit artist and aquarium professional sparked a passion for building landscapes rich with habitat and natural science narratives. Based in Durham, NC, Preston now leads a landscape architecture and art studio, focusing on research-driven, relationship-centered environmental design. His work helps individuals and communities achieve their outdoor lifestyle and conservation goals, creating meaningful, resource-efficient, and enduring spaces that promote education, public health, and environmental stewardship.
