"An artistic masterpiece" (The Washington Post)Michael Fassbender gives a remarkable performance as Bobby Sands in this historical drama set around the 1981 IRA hunger strikes in the notorious Maze Prison. This raw and unflinching film is the first feature directed by the Turner Prize winning artist, Steve McQueen who brings an inventive, artistic eye to his craft. The film follows the final days of Sands' hunger strike, but is as much about portraying the brutal conditions and treatment, and the morality and focus of the hunger strikers. Famous for its quiet intensity, minimal dialogue and a 17 minute naturalistic, single-take shot where the prison priest (Liam Cunningham) and Sands discuss the latter's actions and the shocking outcome.
