Come join us for a hands-on experience with Orca, the live-coding environment! This event will take place at NYC Resistor where you can learn all about Orca's unique features and capabilities. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced coder, this workshop is perfect for anyone interested in music, visuals, or creative coding. Orca is a two-dimensional esoteric programming language in which every letter of the alphabet is an operator, where lowercase letters operate on bang, uppercase letters operate each frame.
The application is not a synthesiser, but a flexible livecoding environment capable of sending MIDI, OSC & UDP to your audio interface, like Ableton.
In this workshop I will get you started with installing Orca, and its companion synth, Pilot as an application on your computer, and give you an intro to coding in orca. I will go over triggering events, sequencing notes, making a tracker style sequencer, saving/recalling patches and more. I will also provide you with txt files of the orca code I will be going over in the workshop for reference. The workshop will be kind of open ended so questions while I'm talking are heavily encouraged.
This class is for livecode people, musicians, live visual artists, or anyone at all thats interested! Orca and Pilot are both free and open source and can be downloaded on windows, mac, linux and unix.

The instructor of this workshop is Femi. They have been preforming experimental electronics as Sadnoise in the NY/Providence/Boston Area for about 5 years now. He's very obsessed with esoteric synths and programming languages that are as weird to use as they are beautiful to look at. He's been using orca as a way of exploring sequencing note information because of its interesting puzzle-like way of patching and coding, but also its simplicity. He loves modular systems and doesn't have a coding background so learning esolangs like orca attract him because they are a fun challenge to learn and try and get the most out of.

Participants should bring their laptop or PC and headphones. People are welcome to bring synths or drum machines to sequence via orca, if they do they should bring their interface, and a midi cable, or a way of sending midi from their computer to their synths, but this is optional. Orca has its own unique syntax, so prior knowledge of coding languages might be useful but is not necessary at all.

This is a masks optional event.
