Humans, Hounds, and Hippos: What Medical and Zoo Science Teaches Us About Animal Recovery and Longevity
In modern human medicine, recovery is no longer viewed strictly as a physical process. The biopsychosocial model demonstrates that emotional health, stress levels, and environmental factors directly dictate physical healing outcomes. We examine how this holistic approach translates directly to companion animals (and Zoo animals), and what we can learn from the frontlines of exotic animal welfare.
Dogs and cats managing chronic pain, geriatric animals or post-surgical recovery do not heal in isolation; fear, boredom, and restrictive environments amplify pain perception and slow down tissue repair. Modern zoo management has many tools and specialism that are highly relevant in this approach e.g. enrichment, environmental parameters, behavioural ecology and habitat management. By bridging the gap between human medical research, exotic welfare science, and veterinary physiotherapy, this presentation explores how addressing the mind, movement, and habitat creates a far more effective framework for recovery and long-term health in the animals under our care.
