A review of the country's progress in combating social inequalities
About this Event

We are thrilled to announce a panel event focusing on the theme of Human Rights and Equality in Greece and Europe.
The LSE SU Hellenic Society has been following recent developments back in Greece, and being aware of a number of issues coming to the fore, has invited representatives from all major parties to take a stand. The format of the event, which will be an open, interactive panel discussion among respresentatives to hear all views and perspectives.
Participants of the panel will be:
- PASOK: Vasia Madesi, Deputy Head of Equality
- SYRIZA: Ifigenia Moumtzi, Candidate for MEP (and LSE Alum)

The aim of the event will be to explore these causes, by making a comparison with other countries, but also by taking a historical look back at the country's course in the fight against social inequalities. The topic is timely, as very recently legislation was passed concerning a social group that has been a subject of discrimination, the LGBTQ+ community. The topics we would like this event to address are, of course, the role of women in society, immigrants in Greece, as well as vulnerable groups such as the disabled, the Roma, and other categories of people who have been marginalized. What initiatives could the state take, taking examples from other countries or wanting to take the lead? What would create a paradigm shift in a country where the far right is on the rise and violence is being normalised?
Each speaker will have the opportunity for an opening statement, then Q&A from the moderator, Alexandros Zachariades, and finally Q&A from the audience.
The discussion is set to take place in the Alumni Theatre in the CKK building on campus. It is an event open to all, as long as you hold a ticket.
The event will be conducted in English to accommodate our diverse audience.
We believe this event will provide a meaningful platform to discuss youth-related policies and visions. Everybody is welcome, especially if they come with questions.
