The Canadian Center for Vaccinology’s Challenge Unit is a highly specialized research facility designed to enable medical researchers to conduct human challenge studies that can help us better understand common infectious diseases.
Be part of the first steps towards stronger immunity.
Whooping cough is highly contagious and still common. It is especially serious for infants. We want to find a way to improve vaccines and immunity.
The first step is learning more about the disease. Also known as controlled human infection models, human challenge trials are a type of clinical trial that intentionally exposes healthy, informed, and consenting adult volunteers to a virus or bacteria. This is done in a safe environment that prevents the spread of the illness and with around-the-clock healthcare support.
Eligibility
-Generally healthy and between the ages of 18-40
-Available to spend 16-21 days in the inpatient Challenge Unit at the IWK Health Center in Halifax
Participation Details
Controlled, planned exposure to whooping cough.
This is a human challenge study. Healthy, informed, consenting adults will be safely exposed to the bacteria that causes whooping cough.
Mild symptoms & around-the-clock wellness support.
The study is designed for mild or no symptoms. You will be carefully monitored by healthcare professionals throughout the 16-21 days you stay with us and will receive antibiotic treatment to end the infection.
Free time & reimbursement.
You can spend your time however you want between scheduled lab tests during the day (including working remotely). You are also reimbursed for any time in the study.
