Three deeply bonded friends. One irreplaceable musical connection.
Devendra Banhart, Gyan Riley, and Noah Georgeson aren't blood relatives, but they act like it. Gyan and Noah's friendship goes back to their teenage years in Nevada City, CA, bonding over a shared obsession with classical guitar. Noah and Devendra's creative partnership took root later, in San Francisco during the 2000s. It would take years more before all three finally connected in Brooklyn — and the moment they did, they knew they had to make music together.
The result is Hug — a largely instrumental album that defies easy categorization. Despite being written by three accomplished guitarists, it's not really a "guitar trio" record in any traditional sense. Instead, it's a warm, wandering collection that pulls in field recordings from sacred sites in India and rivers in Venezuela and Colombia, nods to the New Age influences of their youth, and even a decades-old musical fragment the artists finally figured out how to finish.
