What is Hu Plig?

Hu Plig, or soul calling, is one of the most important healing rituals in Hmong culture. Practiced for generations across the global Hmong community, this ceremony helps restore spiritual balance by calling back a person’s soul that may have become lost due to illness, fear, or hardship. Each part of the ritual, from the language used to the materials involved, carries deep cultural meaning and continues to be practiced today in both traditional and evolving ways.

What will the workshop include?

Participants will learn the step-by-step process of performing a Hu Plig ritual, the significance of each stage, and how to prepare for the ceremony. As part of this immersive learning experience, Billy will provide a copy of his personal Hu Plig training manual, designed to guide participants through the ceremony with clarity.

This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about Hmong spiritual practices, whether you’re reconnecting with ancestral knowledge or curious about the role of ritual in healing. All materials will be provided, and participants are encouraged to ask questions, share reflections, and engage in collective learning.

About Facilitator:

Billy Lor, also known as Hey Billy, is a Hmong shaman, cultural consultant, and educator with over a decade of experience in traditional healing and Hmong spiritual practices. He has taught hundreds of students across the country through workshops, university lectures, and online courses focused on Hmong culture, shamanism, and community wellness. Billy is known for his ability to teach deeply rooted cultural knowledge in accessible and empowering ways.
