HPR Jazz Performance Series - Eha Batutas

HPR’s Atherton Concert Series is back with a new lineup of local musicians celebrating jazz! Join us for the Hawaiʻi Jazz Performance Series at our Honolulu studio featuring: Hot Club of Hulaville with Kelsea Armstrong, Tommy James Trio, Arara de Vento, and Eha Batutas.

Don’t miss your chance to hear their intimate performances and exclusive setlists in person at our Honolulu studio at 738 Kāheka Street. These performances will be recorded for future broadcasts and online content.

Saturday evening, July 6 @ 7 p.m. - Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

About the artists:

Eha Bataus is a collaborative ensemble featuring Dean Taba, bass, Gustavo D'Amico, saxophone, Rafael Amaral, guitar, and Abe Lagrimas, Jr, drums. They'll make their premier performance in the Atherton with each member contributing original compositions featuring individual influences from contemporary jazz to world music.

Dean Taba - Bass
Dean Taba is a freelance bassist, composer, producer, and educator living in Honolulu, HI. After studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Dean moved in 1984 to Los Angeles to further refine his skills on both the Acoustic and Electric bass. For 20 years, Dean worked in the studios of LA with his musical heroes, mentors, and contemporaries recording countless albums, TV shows, jingles, movies, and video game soundtracks .He is now back home performing, teaching, recording, and producing some of Hawaii’s most influential and innovative artists. He is also very excited to be directing the University of Hawaii - Manoa Jazz Ensemble, Hawaii Youth Symphony Jazz program and Pacific Music Institute Jazz Summer Intensive.
Gustavo D’Amico - Horns
Gustavo D’Amico is a saxophonist, composer and educator from São Paulo, Brazil, currently based in Brooklyn, NY. His work is the result of a creative amalgam of different artistic expressions and sound experiences, based on free improvisation, Brazilian music, jazz and contemporary classical music. He is the co-founder of the Alfaia Ensemble, a quintet that focus on the intersection between Brazilian and Middle Eastern music, Peixe Seco, a quartet that researches and investigates contemporary music and Brazilian folkloric music, and Solos de Ave, a trio that explores Brazilian music and free improvisation.

Rafael Amaral - Guitars
Rafael is a composer and guitarist from São Paulo, Brazil. As music director and arranger he has sold more than 200,000 copies with his collaboration with the singer Fabio de Melo and in the music industry was the co-founder and Artistic Director of TotemLiveX, a company specialized in creative live multimedia performances for the corporate clients. His Audiovisual work “Sozinhos entre Fatias”, in collaboration with the artist Cynthia Domenico and André Uba, has been presented in festivals like Lakino: Cinema Babylon in Berlin, In shadow 3: Festival Internacional de Video, Performance e Tecnologias in Lisbon, Plataforma Festival and UferStudios in Berlin, Festival Internacional de Videdanza Agite y Sirva no Mexico. Rafael lives in Honolulu and is passionate about researching music from folkloric traditions and creating new music that incorporates elements and instruments from diverse cultural manifestations.
Abe Lagrimas, Jr. - Drums
Abe Lagrimas, Jr. is a musician, composer, educator, and author who plays the drums, vibraphone, ukulele, and studied at Berklee College of Music. In 2012, he competed in the highly prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Drums Competition and has worked with many different artists such as Kamasi Washington, Eric Marienthal, David Benoit, Doug Webb, Katisse Buckingham, Danny Janklow, Nick Mancini, Barbara Morrison, Michelle Coltrane, Jake Shimabukuro, and Kenny Endo. Also an active educator, he is a Fender Play ukulele instructor, conducts ukulele workshops at festivals around the world, and teaches private lessons on ukulele and drums. After a 15-year long stint in Los Angeles, CA, Abe has returned home and is now currently based in Honolulu, HI. abelagrimasjr.com

The Hawaiʻi Jazz Performance Series takes place on Saturdays June and early July. The evening concerts begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Doors open thirty minutes before the show starts.

This event will be filmed, recorded and photographed. Your presence constitutes your release of all rights to your recorded voice and image, which may be used in projects by Hawaiʻi Public Radio.

Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis — advance ticket purchase is strongly suggested. General admission tickets are $45, with 100% of the proceeds from each event directly supporting the featured artists.

Ticket Policy: Ticket sales are final. Sorry, no refunds.

Parking: Street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood (metered parking is free after 6 pm).
