Herbert Howells wrote his stunning and emotional Requiem in 1932 but it wasn't published until 1981. He used texts from the traditional Requiem Mass as well as other sacred texts such as psalms 23 and 121, and I heard a voice from heaven.
Other music in our programme reflects the texts that Howells chose, including Undine Smith Moore's We Shall Walk through the Valley which links to the text of Psalm 23, renaissance composer Thomas Morley's setting of I Heard a voice from heaven, and other gorgeous and atmospheric music by Felix Mendelssohn, Edgar Bainton and Becky McGlade. Whitehall Choir, under its dynamic Music Director Joanna Tomlinson, is one of London’s leading amateur choirs.
