How does the way we move influence our joints and what does that mean for people living with osteoarthritis? Join Dr Jesse Charlton for an accessible look at the science of movement, joint health, and osteoarthritis. Drawing on research in walking and running biomechanics, pain, and wearable technology, this lecture will explore what we know about the role of movement in osteoarthritis, where important questions remain, and how researchers are working to better understand movement both inside and outside the laboratory.

About this event:

Osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, affecting millions of people and often requiring them to manage pain, stiffness, and changes in mobility over many years. Physical activity and movement are central to maintaining health and function, but when it comes to osteoarthritis, the relationship between movement and joint health is not always straightforward.

Does movement help? Can the way we walk or run influence what happens inside the joint? Is there such a thing as too much, or too little, loading? And can changing the way we move help people remain active?

This lecture will introduce the basics of osteoarthritis and biomechanics before exploring current research on walking, running, joint loading, pain, and new technologies for studying movement in everyday life. Along the way, we will consider both the potential and the limitations of using movement as a tool to understand, manage, and perhaps prevent osteoarthritis.

By the end of the session, attendees should be able to:

1. Understand the basic features of osteoarthritis and the factors that contribute to its development and symptoms

2. Apply simple biomechanical concepts to walking, running, and everyday movement

3. Explain why movement is important for joint health while recognizing the limits of what biomechanics alone can tell us about osteoarthritis

Presenter:

Dr Jesse Charlton is Director of the Applied Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory and an Assistant Professor in the School of Kinesiology at UBC. His research examines how human movement influences joint health, pain, physical function, and musculoskeletal disease, with a particular focus on osteoarthritis. His team combines biomechanics, wearable sensing, and movement analysis to study walking and running in the laboratory and in everyday life, and to develop new approaches for understanding and treating musculoskeletal conditions. Dr Charlton is an Associate Editor for Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, a member of the leadership team of the Balance and Falls Research Centre, and an affiliate member of the Centre for Aging SMART.
