About this Event

The month of August has been known as Black August to civil rights activists since 1979, becoming a time to reflect and uplift Black liberation. The BLACK Gallery presents a showcase honoring the ongoing struggle for human rights centering the solidarity and advocacy work of local organizers and artists.

This exhibit will also feature screenings of the acclaimed documentary . Appointments with a docent at The BLACK Gallery can be made Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 5pm.

On Saturday, August 10th The BLACK Gallery will host a double screening and panel as a fundraiser for Don’t Shoot Portland at Clinton Street Theater. Please register for tickets here, and pay what you will to support our ongoing programming.

Don’t Shoot Portlands’ commitment for preservation and resistance continues in this Liberated Archives series as we recognize that systemic discrimination is sustained by historical and social factors, requiring intentional efforts to identify and dismantle. The show features protest photography spanning over a decade of community action alongside evidential documents illuminating the pervasive inequalities within American society’s structures and institutions. Learn more about our work at DontShootPDX.org and TheBLACKGalleryPDX.com
