Blurb: This discussion and workshop will cover how to turn policy objectives into political realities. Sam and Satu will cover the basics of policymaking across all levels of government, offering insights into how to (and how not to) work with government to advocate for policy goals. This workshop will also cover practical skills like writing submissions and identifying stakeholders to build support for policy recommendations. Participants will leave equipped to navigate the often difficult world of political advocacy as it relates to the music, creative and cultural industries.


Bios: Satu Teppo is a PhD Candidate at the University of South Australia with research interests in new and emerging cultural policy practices, politics of cultural policy and policymaking structures within the arts and cultural field. Prior to commencing her doctoral studies, Satu worked in leadership roles in Europe, Asia and Australia across private, not-for-profit and public sectors. She has extensive experience in working in the arts and cultural field and has held senior positions in the arts and screen sectors within the South Australian public sector and worked as a Ministerial Arts Adviser to the South Australian Government. She is currently an executive committee member of the Arts Industry Council of South Australia.


Sam Whiting is a Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellow at RMIT. He previously served on West Torrens City Council as an elected member, was appointed to the South Australian ‘Artists at Work’ Taskforce and was an executive committee member of the Arts Industry Council of South Australia. Sam has made multiple policy submissions to state and federal governments, been quoted in parliamentary reports, and informed policy decisions relevant to the SA music sector’s post-Covid recovery. Sam has a long history of working with government, as an advocate, academic, and elected member.
