'How to improve your horse's training and contact issues'
This workshop is on September 5th 2026 and is a collaboration between Vet Dr Lily Wilson BVetMed BSc (Hons) MRVCS of Nurturing Nature Equine (www.nurturingnatureequine.co.uk) and Kat Layfield, French Classical Trainer (Légèreté) from Thinking Equitation (www.thinkingequitation.com).
This will be a fun, informative, relaxed day where we will be utilising the lecture room, off horse ‘contact and balance’ exercises and an Equi simulator.
We will explore the various training issues horses’ exhibit. We will look at the common training problems of horses being: hollow (inverting); pulling; leaning; lolling their tongues; grinding their teeth; opening their mouths; coming behind the vertical. You will learn why these problems arise and go home with a wealth of knowledge on how to correct the problems, with ethics forefront.
We will look at correct rein contact and how it impacts our horse. We will explore what correct contact looks like and feels like and how to create a contact with our horse’s mouth that helps support correct communication and posture.
Using the Equi simulator we will look at: How we can improve our riding position to allow independent rein aids; the fundamentals of a stable, comfortable, affective riding position; how to move with the horse at different gaits to synchronise with their movement; how to address asymmetry or discomfort when you ride; How to tell by feel in the saddle what your horse’s limbs and back are doing underneath you; What healthy, symmetrical movement with suspension feels like. Each participant will receive individual tuition on the Equi simulator within a paired setting.
The workshop is limited to 8 participants so book promptly to secure your place and avoid disappointment. The cost is £125 per person, payable in full on booking (non-refundable).
