INSIGHTS Public Lecture: Our global future: How neuroscience, technology, and philosophy will shape society by Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan
Neurophilosophy identifies the critical elements of human nature which have shaped history and argues that addressing basic human dignity is essential for social cohesion. Understanding the rise of new technologies – especially Artificial Intelligence – is ever more important for global security and peace. Professor Al-Rodhan and a panel of experts will discuss the future.
Biography

Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan is a philosopher, neuroscientist, geostrategist & Futurologist.

He is Honorary Fellow, St. Antony's College, Oxford University, UK, Head of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy’s Geopolitics and Global Futures Department, Switzerland, Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study, University of London, UK, Member of the Global Future Council on the Future of Complex Risks at the World Economic Forum (WEF), and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

He holds an MD and PhD. He was educated at Newcastle University, UK, and in the US at the Mayo Clinic, Yale University and Harvard University. He currently divides his academic time between Oxford, London and Geneva.

In 2014, he was voted as one of the Top 30 most influential Neuroscientists in the world, in 2017, he was named amongst the Top 100 Geostrategists in the World, and in 2022, he was named as one of the Top 50 influential researchers whose work could shape 21st-century politics and policy.

He is a Prize-winning scholar who has written 25 books and more than 340 articles. His research focuses on the transdisciplinary interplay between: Philosophy, Neuroscience, Geopolitics, international relations, Political theory, Cascading global frontier risks, Disruptive technologies, AI, Synthetic biology, Global Futures, Sustainable National and Global Security, Outer Space Security and Sustainability, 21C Statecraft, Transcultural security and synergies, and Collective Civilizational Sustainability. Ticket Information

  • This event will be held in the Curtis Auditorium, Herschel Building at Newcastle University (NE1 7RU).

Venue Details and Accessibility

  • The Herschel Building is located a 3-minute walk from Haymarket Metro Station and Bus Station, and is easily accessible by Public Transport.
  • The Curtis Auditorium is a tiered lecture theatre and has 8 designated spaces for wheelchair users, with flat-level access. There is also a hearing loop system and an accessible toilet nearby.
  • Please contact us if you or a guest will be accompanied by an assistance dog. We’ll make sure the dog can sit with you comfortably.
