How Native Salt Marsh Plants Build a Resilient Coast with Dr. Lori Sutter

What if the future of our coast is being shaped by what happens beneath our feet? Beneath every salt marsh is a living underground network of roots and rhizomes working to build soil, capture carbon, and help the marsh rise with the tide. Join Dr. Sutter to discover how Spartina alterniflora—our native smooth cordgrass—actually helps determine the elevation of a marsh and how scientists measure whether these wetlands are keeping pace with sea-level rise. We'll also explore the surprising amount of carbon stored in marsh soils and why protecting these hidden carbon reserves matters for our coast and our climate. Drawing from ongoing research and plans for long-term monitoring along the Northeast Cape Fear River, we'll look at what these marshes can teach us about resilience—and whether they can keep rising as the water rises around them.
