How Nations Innovate: Lessons from Finland
About this Event
Finland is widely recognised as one of Europe's most innovative economies, combining strong research capabilities with a clear focus on industrial competitiveness and economic growth.
In this fireside discussion, Finland's Minister of Economic Affairs, Sakari Puisto, will explore how a small nation has built an innovation system designed to move quickly, align priorities across government, and translate research and development into economic value. The Minister will be in coversation with Professor Eoin O'Sullivan, Director, Centre for Science, Technology & Innovation Policy (CSTI) at the University of Cambridge.
The conversation will examine the relationship between innovation policy and industrial strategy, the role of public research and innovation organisations, and how governments can create the conditions for long-term competitiveness in an increasingly geoeconomic world. The discussion will also consider what lessons Finland's experience may hold for the UK.
The session will be introduced by David Halpern, Director of the Downing Battcock Institute (DBI).
This event, organised by the DBI, is a rare opportunity for Cambridge students to engage directly with a serving European minister in an intimate Cambridge setting, ask questions, and gain first-hand insight into how innovation, industrial strategy, and economic policy are shaped at the highest levels of government.
Venue: Senior Common Room (SCR), Downing College, Cambridge.
