Home Visit Rating Scales (HOVRS):

The Home Visit Rating Scales (HOVRS) is an evidence-based tool used to observe home visit practices and family engagement. HOVRS research has shown that use of the HOVRS practices leads to improved engagement by the caregiver and better child outcomes.

HOVRS is consistent with quality standards for most evidence-based home visiting programs, including the Early Head Start Program Performance Standards and Parents as Teachers Quality Standards.

Working with children with disabilities? The HOVRS measures recommended family practices of the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

Workshop presenters:

Lori Roggman ([email protected]) and Mark Innocenti ([email protected]), authors of Developmental Parenting, PICCOLO, and HOVRS

Virtual workshop format:

Five 2-hour webinars presented over a 5-week period

Our 2-hour webinars are interactive and require pre-webinar learning activities and participation from each attendee. Learning activities include readings and responses, self-reflection about practices and perspectives, self-video observations, writing positive feedback statements or reflections, practicing with a measure, or other activities. Each series is equivalent to a 2-day workshop.

NOTE: For the most effective use of either PICCOLO or HOVRS, we recommend the Developmental Parenting series in addition to the series on the measurement tool.

PLEASE BE AWARE:

• There are no refunds for missed webinars.

•Cancellations prior to the workshop will be reimbursed minus Eventbrite fees.

• Webinar materials may not be disseminated. We will not record and do not allow you to record webinars.

• An application form for permission to use HOVRS-3 for 3 years is provided to those who complete HOVRS training.

•To implement PICCOLO or HOVRS: Each program must establish reliability between 2 or more observers who meet the agreement criteria on 4 or more observations (detailed guidance in webinar P-4, H-4). Our training webinars do not include reliability testing (contact us if you need it).

•For a Certificate of Attendance: Attendance and completion of learning activities are required.

• (To increase home visiting quality, we also recommend our webinar series on Developmental Parenting home visiting practices.)

Additional Info:

What Developmental Parenting is about: Our training is based on practices described in the book, Developmental Parenting: A Guide for Early Childhood Practitioners by Lori Roggman, Lisa Boyce, and Mark Innocenti, (Brookes Publishing, 2008), informed by recent research on home visiting effectiveness. Developmental parenting refers to parent behaviors that support children’s early development and also to an intervention approach in which practitioners facilitate developmentally supportive parenting.

To effectively promote developmental parenting, practitioners need tools, skills, strategies to promote parenting interactions that are known to support children’s early development and to encourage what parents already do in their daily lives to support their children’s development. The HOVRS and PICCOLO tools were developed for home visiting practitioners and related professionals. Each require similar skills and strategies for using the tools to increase the quality and impact of home visiting. These tools, skills, and strategies work with parents from diverse ethnicities and backgrounds and have been used in settings in home visiting and similar parenting support contexts around the world.
