A Nightmare on Franklin Street’s day of “house” horror opens with House on Haunted Hill, a Vincent Price chiller (celebrating its 65th anniversary this year!) about an eccentric millionaire who offers $10,000 to five people on the condition that they stay overnight in his haunted house. At midnight he’s going to remove all phones and radios, lock the doors, bar the windows, and trap everyone inside with himself and his wife, whom he clearly hates (it’s mutual).
It’s a fun, spooky romp, and an early exemplar of the work of producer/director William Castle, famous for his outlandish promotional gimmicks. He marketed House on Haunted Hill with “Emergo” technology, which meant that during a certain scene, a plastic skeleton on a wire would be pulled over the heads of the theater audience. There’s breaking the fourth wall, and then there’s flying a prop right through it.
Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a short Film Talk and audience Q&A with University of Tampa Film Studies & Screenwriting Lecturer, Ryan Terry. Film Talks are included with your movie ticket.
