It's Carnival weekend in London, its that time of the year where Carribbean roots and culture flood the London streets and is flooding the Kiki scene this August!

Tonight, I wanna see everyone come and showcase their talent and show the judges why they should have their moment and shine on the float at Notting Hill Carnival 2024.

BALL CULTURE

Originating from Drag Balls that date back over 150 years ago in Harlem, New York and founded by Black and Latinx members of the LGBTQI+ community, Ballroom is an intentional space that celebrates and prioritises LGBTQI+ People of Colour.

Pioneered by Crystal Labeija, ball culture has spread across the globe - thanks to one of its many competitive categories - Voguing, an improvisational art form/dance with rhythmic movement inspired by models' poses in fashion magazines. Voguing has since become a powerful representation of the socio-political struggles of LGBTQI+ people of colour.

"Balls" are competitions/events where individuals and houses come together to compete in categories across fashion, beauty, realness and performance for prizes.

"Houses" are family units that are formed as support networks, with parents of each House guiding & caring for their children and as teams to compete together at Balls.

No matter if they are trending, pretty or thick: you are the real baddest gyal in Carnival and you are not to be messed with! Bring it to the judges with a mandatory handbag with weapon of choice and prove your untouchable.

MF Realness?(Schoolboy, Prettyboy, Thug, Everyday & Transman)

Schoolboy Realness: You finally reached the age and you will be in attending your first ever Carnival! However, this year is your year to work on your families stall and win the customers over with your handsome aura. Bring it to the judges as a young stall worker and win them over with your families product (mandatory) and most importantly, your charm.

Prettyboy Realness: There is a plethora of fine ass men at Notting Hill Carnival all colours and sizes, bring it as a London Hot boy ready to break hearts this carnival weekend.

Thug Realness: The Bad Bwoy! You didn't come to dance, your not starting trouble but you will definitely finish the problem if it comes to it. Bring it to the judges as a London roadman and let them know that no one can test your badnes this Carnival.

Everyday/ Transman Realness: London is notorious for fusing Carribbean culture and Football all year long. Your a 'Cheeky Chap' up for a laugh and fun this Carnival: bring it in a mandatory football shirt of any carribbean country.
