About this Event

In this weekend workshop, you'll get your first introduction to hot sculpting glass in the hot shop! Hot sculpting is the art of shaping hot glass into asymmetrical forms and recognizable shapes using tools, gravity, and heat. Solid glass can be shaped, added on, and cut to create texture and form. We will use hot-torches to spot-heat specific segments of the glass while the rest stays stable and cold. After exploring solid glass, we will sculpt hollow forms. Working from inside and outside the bubble the students will explore forms from nature like animals, plants, and anatomical renderings. Bring your sketchbook and inspiration images and we will figure out a path to your ideas in glass.

What to expect: Short demos will be followed by super fun workdays in the hot-shop. Hot Sculpting involves the use of a torch, which you will be taught to use safely and effectively. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Eligibility: Some previous glassblowing experience required. If you know how to gather glass from the furnace and you are a team player you are in the right place. Don’t feel ready yet? Check out our more introductory classes to build your skills. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The thicker the glass is, the longer it needs to cool down in the kiln, so sculpture tends to be on a multi-day kiln cycle. Students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.
