At the end of the exhibition "Fragments of Life: A Ukrainian Diary" with works by the photographer Mila Techaieva, Vitsche deals with her central themes of experiencing and sharing memories through personal records. Vitsche is an association of young committed Ukrainians in Germany who cannot stand by and watch the Russian war in Ukraine. Vitsche organises protests, cultural and educational events, helps refugees and organises humanitarian aid for Ukraine. A central pillar of Vitsche's activities is cultural diplomacy and contemporary art. Vitsche aims to be a bridge between Ukraine and Germany to promote Ukrainian culture and issues in an interdisciplinary way.
The programme shows that artists from Ukraine play an important role in translating personal, pictorial, collective experiences. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience different facets of contemporary Ukrainian culture and protest art, and how art and creative expression have become a means of resistance and defence for Ukrainian artists.
Finissage curated by: Katja Balzheichuk and Serafima Brig (culture managers in Vitsche). The event takes place in English.
12.00: Vitsche Introduction & Opening Pop-Up Installation
After an insight into the work of their international organization, Vitsche will open the pop-up installation "steal. stole. stolen": Inspired by the Archaeological Community of Ukraine's information and education campaign, the installation highlights Ukrainian archaeological artefacts stolen by Russia from the 18th century to the present.
14.30-16.00: "The long arms of Russian imperialism: a case of Ukrainian culture in Europe".
In this panel discussion, Ukrainian art historians Yuliia Berdiiarova (Museum Ludwig, Cologne) and Valeria Schiller (2022 fellow at the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin) will present their perspectives on the perception of Ukrainian culture and art in Europe and the way it has been influenced by the decades-long practices of Russian imperialism. The conversation will be moderated by Kateryna Demerza (doctoral student of philosophy at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv).
16.30-17.30: Audiovisual performance by Mykola Lebed.
Ukrainian multi-instrumentalist Mykola Lebed plays a set based on the free jazz approach and the sonic diversity of the saxophone, which he mixes with synthesizers to create an intense, multi-layered and unique experience.
