About this Event

We are holding another Site Captain training this year. The idea behind this is to further educate and empower our volunteers to take on a leadership role on our beaches. A Site Captain is required on each beach every survey night and is in charge during the survey. If you have been a Site Captain previously, but were not trained last year, we are requiring you to attend to get updated protocols for leading a survey and to share your wisdom with our newer Site Captains. The training is only required once to participate as a Site Captain in the future. Regular volunteer training remains on a 3-year schedule.

Site Captain general responsibilities

  • Gather/return provided survey supplies to/from the St. Jones Reserve
  • Ensure volunteer success while conducting the survey
  • Reviewing survey protocols, answering questions, assist in horseshoe crab identification
  • Ensure safety on the beach
  • Survey participation (walking on sand, bending/squatting, listening, filling out data sheets)
