For horse owners, or future horse owners, we are offering a series of lessons on basic horsemanship skills to prepare you for the upcoming riding season. Each week one topic will be discussed and demonstrated, then each participant will have a chance to practice the skill with one of our horses. Presence for each class is not required, although a discount is given for attending more than one.
May 4 - How to do a physical exam: including checking heart rate/pulse, temperature, digital pulses, respiratory rate, capillary refill time, hydration and more. Know what is normal for your horse and how to provide the vet with vital statistics if something goes awry.
May 11 - Common Leg Wraps: How to properly wrap a horse's leg for exercise or injury protection & prevention. Attendees will learn correct methods for doing polo wraps, standing wraps and shipping wraps.
May 18 - Saddle Fit Basics: Participants will learn how to examine English saddles for safe use and how to check for fit on a standing horse. This is the first step in looking at saddle fit on horses. If a saddle appears to fit based on the criteria discussed, then it can be checked while the horse is being ridden.
May 25 - Loading Horses in a Trailer: Trailer loading can be one of the most stressful and dangerous things we do with our horses and is not something that should be attempted the day of the vet visit or horse show, but practiced ahead of time. In this class, participants will learn some techniques and strategies for loading horses to help make the process go more smoothly, quickly and safely. For this class, gloves are required and helmets are recommended. We will have some to loan if needed.
June 1 - How to Help your Horse accept a bridle: Bridling a horse is something that should be done with care and sensitivity. There are a lot of delicate structures on the horse's head and riders should be conscientious about how to apply and fit a bridle so that the horse is calm about the process. If you have a horse that tries to avoid being bridled, this class will give you some strategies for overcoming your horse's reluctance.
June 8 - Horse Show Prep: Learn what to expect for your first, or next, horse show. Topics will include rider etiquette, what to wear, how to choose classes, and judging criteria. Good riding is only a very small part of a successful horse show!
June 15 - Braiding Long Manes for Horse Shows: Many horses have their manes trimmed and thinned for braiding but if you are only showing once, or just prefer to keep your horse's mane long, there are several ways to braid the mane so that it will be neat and tidy for judging.
Classes are $15 each or $10 for multiples (paid in advance). Registration is required. Materials needed for each class will be provided with the exception noted for trailer loading.
