Known early as a domestic architect of “artistic homes,” W. T. Downing (1865-1918) was one of Atlanta’s leading architects of the late-Victorian / Edwardian period. Designer of schools, churches, and early skyscrapers, as well as the homes of some of Atlanta’s leading citizens, Downing was active from 1890 until his untimely death in October, 1918, following his being run over by a large touring car while he and his family were on a trip to Philadelphia. He was fifty-three. Atlanta landmarks by Downing include Oglethorpe University, Trinity/Sacred Heart/First Presbyterian churches, early buildings at Georgia Tech, and the Healey building (with Morgan and Dillon) in the Fairlie Poplar district downtown, as well as architecture in Chattanooga and at Shorter College in Rome. “The Architecture of W. T. Downing” is one of DeKalb History Center’s periodic free public lectures by architectural historian Robert M. Craig, Professor Emeritus, College of Design, Georgia Tech. Dr. Craig will illustrate the wide range of Downing’s work utilizing both archival black & white images and contemporary color photographs by Dr. Craig, whose pictures of buildings have been published widely in books on Atlanta architecture as well as in encyclopedias and dictionaries of architecture and gardens both here and abroad.
