Sydney band HOOLAHAN may have played infrequently over the years, yet they remain the cosmic North Star of the local indie rock scene – guiding the way with their thrilling guitar interplay and unimpeachable melodic compass.
Their third studio album BAY OF CHANCE – released 25 September on Wayne Connolly’s Scenic Drive Records – is a beautiful parade of sophisticated songs and lyrical laments that ring with hope in times of uncertainty.
The album came together over a series of writing and recording sessions, with songwriters David Orszaczky and Tim Kevin swapping ideas via post and in-person. Canberra natives and lifelong friends with an enduring musical chemistry, David and Tim allowed the songs to develop and fall into place – compiling the keepers from a range of new material developed since their last full-length release CASUARINA (2017). Harry Roden (bass) and Neil Bateman (drums) added their distinctive touch and it was smooth sailing from there.
The result is a gentle landing – an unhurried collection of songs selected for mood and flow that showcases their upbeat melodic guitar roots as well as venturing into more dreamlike, reflective and cinematic territory.
Joining the bill are local indie royalty and good mates VICTORIA. Double J Radio called them “an Australian supergroup”. Victoria is a project from long-time friends Cameron Emerson-Elliott (Youth Group), Alison Galloway (Smudge), Patrick Matthews (The Vines, Youth Group) and Max Doyle (Songs). Named for the Kinks’ song, Victoria’s strength lies in their effortless ability to paint an evocative lyrical picture and set it to a memorable toe-tapping tune. Their latest double- A-side single AK79/Kids My Age proves it conclusively.
Opening proceedings are the wonderful TEAM BUILDING. Debuting under a Dulwich Hill carport, Team Building invite you to simmer gently and sigh loudly. Their tight-knit indie-rock sound has taken them from humble beginnings to supporting heroes and friends from The Apartments, Infinity Broke, and The Tambourine Girls.
This Eora-based band love a good narrative, making sense of their world in real-time through songs about getting dressed for work and leaving an unforgiving post or practice, encased in gentle rhythms and thoughtful keys. Their softly spoken nature belies a firm awareness and observation of the strange resonance of the everyday, suggesting something unsettled yet deeply creative lying beneath the urban idyll. Listen to the latest single When I Dress For You.
