Never held a crochet hook? Good. In three hours, you'll turn yarn into a Christmas bauble that's yours to hang!
About this Event

There is something quietly satisfying about watching a loop of yarn become a round, squishy ornament in your own hands. Hooked on Christmas is a one-afternoon crochet session built for complete beginners - no experience, no equipment, and no idea what a slip stitch is required.

You will learn the handful of basic stitches that make up a bauble, pick your own colours, and work your way from a fiddly first round to a finished ornament you can hang on the tree at home.

Crochet is slower than it looks, and that is the useful part. Stitches get dropped. Rounds get counted twice. Somewhere in the second hour most participants hit the point where it would be easier to stop — and discover that unpicking a few rows and carrying on is entirely survivable. The repetitive rhythm of hook and yarn also does something to a busy mind, which is why we build in a short pause partway through to notice how the body settles when the hands are occupied.

Come for the ornament, stay for the unexpectedly calm afternoon. Suitable for ages 12 to 18, all skill levels!

This course allows participants to:

  • Stay with the tangle instead of walking away - Dropped stitches and miscounted rounds are guaranteed, and participants practise unravelling rather than abandoning the piece. Sticking with something awkward is how confidence gets built, and it transfers well beyond yarn.
  • Find the rhythm that settles them - The repetitive motion of crochet and counting of the stitches as they work gives the mind somewhere steady to rest and something to work on then wonder. Participants are guided through a short pause midway to notice the focus they needed to use and forgiveness when they forgot the count.

  • Judge the piece by more than how neat it is - First baubles come out lopsided, and that is entirely the point. Participants leave recognizing that the afternoon's worth lies in what they stuck with and figured out, not in whether the finished ornament looks like the one in the video.

  • Talk easily across a shared table - Craft tables make conversation simple: hands are busy, eye contact is optional, and asking a neighbor for help is natural. Participants build social confidence sideways, without being put on the spot.
