Students Wendy Lan, Erin Melin and Sam Stickney take part in a joint Honors in Art Exhibition in Salem State's Winfisky Gallery. The exhibition includes an Artist Talk on May 4 at 12:30 pm via Zoom. Advance registration required.
An Artists Reception will be held on May 4 from 1:30 pm to 3 pm. All are welcome.
Wendy Lan is an activist and a multimedia artist born in Zhuhai, China. When they were nearly five, Wendy and their family moved to Queens, New York, leaving a nation that was attempting to erase their ethnic culture. Through artistic creation, Lan presents themselves, and others ostracized by hegemony, as beacons of beauty, diversity, and power. Wendy’s art admires the power of individuality, passion, and uniqueness that holds the potential to topple violent systems pursuing silence and rigidity.
The purpose of Wendy's honors project is to examine the visual culture attached to how non-binary people are represented in mainstream media, and how there are both positive and negative outcomes from these representations. While there is more inclusion now more than ever in media and entertainment, the popular aesthetics we see don’t always carry through in every identifying non-binary person.
Erin Melin is a senior graphic design student. Erin often incorporates her own personal photography and illustrations into her design work and is continually looking for ways to enhance her designs, including video and animation. Her honors project focuses on packaging of children's cereal products - Why don’t we see healthy children’s cereal products using the same playful packaging as the unhealthy brands? Rather than using bright colors, characters, catchy slogans, and creative foods to persuade children into becoming consumers of unhealthy cereal products, my project explores the effectiveness of these design tactics when applied more ethically to a healthier alternative.
Sam Stickney will graduate as an Art & Design major with a double art concentration in Printmaking and Art History, with an additional major in World Languages & Cultures with a concentration in French, and a Certification in Translation. Sam's multiple areas of study reflect their passion about art, history and language. Much like the work completed with their majors, Sam's theses titled “French Canadian Folktales” and “Les Femmes Oubliées de l'Impressionnisme Français (The Forgotten Women of French Impressionism)”, I hope to continue studying and making work that incorporates all the subjects that I’m passionate about.
Sam's thesis titled “French Canadian Folktales” is a testament is a marriage of the invaluable passions the artist has accrued during my time as a student: printmaking and French. Their goal for this thesis was to create a highly collaborative experience that incorporates these two passions in a way that showcases both their translation work and their studio time.
