The summer solstice is the longest day of the year. It’s often seen as a time to honor the sun through the practice of Surya Namaskar, or sun salutations – and it’s not uncommon to see workshops where 108 of these flowing sequences are practiced in a row. These kinds of practices can be powerfully meditative – and they can also encourage people to ignore the messages from their bodies and push through pain or exhaustion. They also are simply not accessible to many people.
In Honor the Sun, you’ll warm up your body and strengthen the mind-body connection through gentle therapeutic movements. We’ll then explore some fun variations on flowing movements that are loosely based on Surya Namaskar and are accessible to more bodies, including some variations using a chair, with a focus on learning which movements feel most supportive and celebratory in your unique body. Flowing sequences will be done slowly with lots of guidance in adapting for the amount of effort and the pace that you enjoy, and keeping in mind the time of day.
Workshop fee: $20. Class will be recorded (only the teacher video will show on the recording) and will be available to registered students to view online for one week following the workshop. Downloads will not be permitted.
I offer a “pay what you can” pricing option on this program. To use it, enter the code PAYWHATYOUCAN at checkout to waive the fee, and then donate what you can at paypal.me/rachelishiguroyoga.
